1. Large-Scale River Restoration

This day trip takes you upstream along the Danube River, where you will visit the large-scale bypass channel VERBUND Fish Passage Altenwörth, as well as fascinating restoration and habitat enhancement projects along the Danube, its side channels, and tributaries: LIFE Project Traisen and LIFE Project Wachau.

Two out of six sturgeon species in the danube river are already extinct. LIFE-Boat 4 Sturgeon is a unique floating hatchery recently established on the shores of Danube Island in Vienna, Austria. It serves to house and breed broodstock and rear juvenile sturgeons in order to establish a living gene bank, preserve the remaining four sturgeon species in the Danube River Basin, and to strengthen wild populations.

3. Alpine Hydropower: Flagship facilities in western Austria

Overnight Fieldtrip: Travel to Western Austria to experience the spectacular mountain landscape and visit key sites of Austrian alpine hydropower. Highlights include Kopswerk II, one of the largest pumped-storage power plants; the hydropeaking compensation basin Silz, the largest of its kind in Europe; the innovative fish lift at Runserau; and GKI, one of the largest hydropeaking diversion power plants worldwide.

This hands-on workshop is designed for professionals involved in fish monitoring who want to learn or deepen their knowledge of PIT tag technology. Participants will gain both theoretical insights and practical experience in proper fish tagging techniques, ensuring tagged fish behave like untagged ones, and will also work with software for data collection during live demos.
